Davina/Dave a play on gender.

This is artwork was chosen for the “Inspired by…” and exhibited at the Victoria & Albert museum in London, 2005.
The work had to be “inspired by” piece(s) in the museum. The works I chose were Michelangelo’s David and Dying Slave from the Plaster Casts Court.
The work while having classical references is obviously also rooted in the contemporary image of the nude. The pose of twisted torso with arms raised or stretched while relating to the past plays on ideas of the nude today.
The title also suggests ideas of the feminisation of the male body- the sculptures David and the Dying Slave are both male. The pose could easily be found today in a glossy magazine men’s or woman’s. I think an interesting point and one that can be developed further with society’s love of the classical and today’s blurring of boundaries of gender and body image.
